Rangarping Eystra I

This series of prints was inspired by the alien, volcanic landscapes of Iceland locations and lands from the imagination, experienced on a visit in 2017. The terrain presented both an opportunity and a significant challenge. Often, the most interesting scars and other marks were not present in vistas, but in the details. In southern Iceland, the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, with its black sand beaches, lava rock, basalt cliffs, and the haunting Mýrdalsjökull glacier presented a wide variety of textures that could be represented through printmaking. As a result, marks on the printing plates had to be scaled down to capture the detail and a sense of a landscape at once solidified out of lava, and in a state of geological flux. All images in this series were an unplanned, visceral response to the memory of these magical places.

This print will be part of my solo show ‘Landscapes: Real and Imagined’ on at The Steel Rooms in Brigg, North Lincolnshire. 23 March – 11 May 2019.
