Show Stories: Crescent Moon
I’ve been thinking about some ideas for related activities during the exhibition. One of those might involve me presenting a ‘live’ print session at The Ropewalk. To do this, I thought I would prepare some simple printing plates, in shapes that people will identify with. So, I’ve come up with these Crescent Moons.
Making the basic shape of a printing plate in this way is a first for me. Until now, I have made every plate entirely by hand. Here, the shapes were cut out using a laser printer in the Maker Lab in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln. I had been a little nervous about making the plates in this way, thinking that they might be less ‘authentic’. However, I was soon reassured when I thought it through. I’ll be sealing them with varnish in the usual way before creating different textures and patterns on each one, using a variety of materials.
During the show, I’m hoping that we can invite people to the Print Studio, ink one of the plates in their presence and make a print ‘direct from the artist’ for them to take away. In this way, I would like to encourage people to see printmaking in action, make the connection between plate and print and therefore be informed on how the works in the exhibition were created.
