    Paper: Flexures

    Flexures

At the start of the Covid lockdowns, I found myself at home without the use of a printing press. I wanted to carry on making new work, so I had to come up with new ways of thinking and new ways of using materials that did not need a press. At recent exhibitions at London’s Tate Modern and Tate Britain, I had been intrigued by metal sculptures that had been folded together and hung in space. So, I began pre-creasing printing paper in multiple directions. These preachings gave me the opportunity to fold a piece of paper into an almost endless variety of shapes, which I began to refer to as ‘Flexures’. Soon, I was experimenting with pre-creasing before covering the paper sheets in metal leaf and printing on one or both sides. Flexures began appearing in my exhibitions from around 2022 onwards.
