Apparently, they have been running one for some years, but I just hadn\u2019t seen it before.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for this year\u2019s show was \u2018Symbol\u2019, described as&#8230;. \u2018a mark, sign or word that indicates, signifies or is understood to as representing an idea, object or relationship\u2019, or \u2018a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79297\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79298\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Above: test print with threads and raffia sewn into the surface<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79300\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"823\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Above: thread, hand coloured with metallic ink<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In response to the theme, I chose the simple Circle, a symbol that has been important for different religious and non-religious groups for thousands of years \u2013 from Assyrian and Egyptian civilisations to Pagan and Christian religions. Although my own thinking on circle related to ideas of \u2018the whole\u2019 or being \u2018complete\u2019, I decided not to communicate this through a written definition. Instead, I wanted to let people decide for themselves why my circle might mean to them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79299\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/circle_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"992\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For some inspiration, I looked back at \u2018Moment\u2019, a\u00a0print I had produced some years previously for a Printmakers Council show, to mark the centenary of the \u00a0Irish Revolution. That print used gold-coloured threads sewn through the print and paper, as post-print embellishments. I liked the general idea, so I thought I would do something similar for the new piece.<\/p>\n<p>After experimenting with a few different materials, I chose raffia and set about playing with ways of decorating its surface.This meant that when the print was ready, I knew how the raffia would look and how it would be securely and invisibly attached.<\/p>\n<p>The print has turned out to be one of my favourite pieces and was well received, with highly favourable comments from show visitors.
