{"id":51822,"date":"2017-03-05T14:17:23","date_gmt":"2017-03-05T14:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/?p=51822"},"modified":"2026-04-16T07:17:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T07:17:00","slug":"new-directions-plate-textures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/?p=51822","title":{"rendered":"New directions: plate textures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After cutting the basic shapes I needed, it was time for the exciting bit \u2013 adding the surface textures.<\/p>\n<p>For this new series of prints, I had in mind the idea of creating some &#8216;imagined lands&#8217;; these abstracted shapes could represent aerial views of islands or other territories, but as they would not be based on real places, it would leave me free to experiment with different surface details. \u00a0So this time, rather than reaching for my bags of fabric and other materials, I decided to limit the textures to lines and built up gels and pastes, perhaps representing differing degrees of solidity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7662.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1290\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7662.png\" alt=\"Applying crackle paste\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Crackle paste: produces surface cracks when applied in a thick layer<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7320.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1176\" src=\"http:\/\/sinclairashman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7320.png\" alt=\"What's in 'The Box': shaping tools and brushes\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Some of the tools I use to apply, carve and smooth acrylic pastes and gels<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although I had original sketches to work to, I allowed the material and the\u00a0board shape to dictate what kind of marks to make in the gels. \u00a0In a way, making plates like this is as interesting and as much fun as producing nice prints. Wet, poured varnish and carborundum, heated until it blisters and separates.
