By 2016, I think I had been a member of the Printmakers Council for just a couple of years. Members were asked to submit works for a special exhibition marking the Centenary of the Irish Republic, to be held at Farmleigh Gallery in Dublin. My submission, ‘Moment’, was inspired by the idea of that exact moment in time at which independence was declared – a spark or explosion of dynamism at the birth of a nation. The printing plate was made by cutting intricate shapes out of birch plywood using a laser cutter. Once printed, I decided to sew in and out of the paper using gold thread to highlight the idea of a golden wave of optimism at the declaration. I travelled to Dublin to attend the opening evening reception.
